In FemtoLASIK, a flap is created in the cornea before laser reshaping. First, a femtosecond laser creates thousands of microscopic bubbles at a precise depth within the cornea, forming a perfectly even flap. The surgeon then lifts this hinged flap to expose the underlying tissue. The excimer laser reshapes the cornea to correct the vision. Finally, the flap is carefully repositioned, where it adheres naturally without stitches. The entire process takes about 10-15 minutes for both eyes.
Before procedure
Stop wearing contact lenses as directed by your surgeon (often 1 week for soft lenses, longer for hard/RGP lenses).
Arrange for transportation to and from the surgery center.
Avoid using eye makeup, creams, or perfumes on the day of surgery.
You will be prescribed antibiotic drops to start before surgery.
After procedure
Recovery is rapid. Your doctor will remove the bandage lens the day after surgery. Most people see well enough to drive and return to work within 24-48 hours.
You may experience a mild gritty feeling, watering, and light sensitivity for a few hours after surgery.
You must wear protective shields while sleeping for the first week to avoid rubbing the eye.
Use all prescribed eye drops (antibiotic and steroid) diligently to prevent infection and inflammation.
Avoid swimming, hot tubs, and eye makeup for the first 2 weeks.
Complication and alarm signs
Risks include dry eye, glare/halos, and flap-related issues (very rare) such as dislocation, inflammation under the flap (DLK), or epithelial ingrowth.
Contact your surgeon immediately if you experience: Any trauma to the eye (poking, hitting), severe pain, a sudden blurry or hazy vision after initial clear vision, or increasing redness.
