This surgery is performed to remove excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. The goal of this procedure is to improve the appearance of puffy, sagging, or tired-looking eyes and rejuvenate the periorbital area. Occasionally, excess skin on the upper eyelid can also restrict the lateral visual field, a condition that is corrected through this surgery.
Before procedure
A precise consultation is essential to understand realistic expectations of the surgical outcome. Smoking must be discontinued weeks before the surgery, as it impairs the healing process. Blood-thinning medications, specific supplements, and herbal products should be discontinued under the surgeon's guidance to reduce the risk of bleeding during the procedure.
After procedure
During the first two days, continuous application of cold compresses significantly helps reduce swelling and bruising. Rest and sleeping in an elevated position with several pillows under the head (semi-reclined) are recommended. Avoid strenuous activities and bending over for at least two weeks. Refrain from sun exposure and using eye cosmetic products until complete recovery.
Complication and alarm signs
Formation of an extensive hematoma (blood collection) which may require drainage, wound infection, development of unpleasant scarring, or asymmetry of results are complications of this surgery. Sensory changes such as numbness or tingling in the eyelid are usually temporary. In rare cases, pulling of the lower eyelid skin may cause ectropion and mild deformity. Visual threatening complications of this surgery are extremely rare.
